The
Greenville, Texas Uechi-Ryu Karate School, taught at the TWO facility, is
a member of the North American Uechi-Ryu Karate Association. We are an organization
maintained by some 25 Black Belts trained in the traditional Okinawa style
of Karate, formed by the Uechi family as a means of personal development
and self defense. Our training has been passed to us directly from Master
Kanei Uechi, whose father studied the techniques in China and formalized
the style in 1910 upon returning to Okinawa. We are committed to the perfection
of our understanding and the preservation of the Uechi-Ryu system of karate.
Our
practice consists of a series of formalized movements done individually and
in a combination with a partner. The practice generally leads to the attainment
of the rank of Shodan (first degree black belt) in approximately four years
of study.
Training in the Uechi-Ryu karate is open to all men and women with sufficient
self control to practice on their own what they are taught by their instructors.
Attendance at two formal classes each week is typical.
We are not tournament oriented. Fighting (sparring) practice is done only
as a means of developing reflexive responses to various attacks that the
student might experience in the course of defending themselves. All sparring
is done in the spirit of cooperation with one’s sparring partner.
